Let Them Eat Cake

One of the main stars, other than yourselves of course, of the wedding day…cake. It even has it’s own little “Ta-Da” moment during a wedding day! Is it above it’s station or does it deserve to be on a pedestal?

Most of you have always assumed a wedding cake would be part of your wedding day, and some people may have planned it aged 8 3/4 whilst others are just not sure what the heck to go for.

With so many options available, where on earth do you start? Here is a little guide to try to help you end up with the cake of your wedding dreams. (That it is most likely you will never get a taste of on the day!)

Flavour

Fruit cake was used historically as it didn’t spoil – it lasted a long time, with the top tier being saved for an anniversary or a babies birth so traditionally wedding cake is fruit cake (er… yuk!) but to be honest, these days most bakers will do whatever you want. I find that many people still keep a little tradition with at one tier of fruitcake still.

You can use tiers to your advantage, have both of your fave flavours, and your guests get an option! You may like chocolate cake and your partner may like coconut cake, why not have the best of both worlds?

Do we need to “cut” the cake?

Grab a saw! The fruitcake mentioned, used to be so hard, silver saws used to be used to cut into them!

Cutting of the cake used to be a sign that the party is over, but these days it tends to be at the end of the formal affair (before your evening guests arrive). There is no reason why you cannot do it earlier, handy if your photographer is not there all day and it can actually be served after dinner rather than it getting missed later on if you are on a budget wedding mission.

I don’t like cake…

Plenty of couples are opting for something different these days.

It could be cupcakes that are mixed in flavour, it could be scrummy donuts, it could be cookies.

It also doesn’t have to be sweet at all. There is a rising trend for “cheese” cakes, which offers a nice nibble with your cup of tea before you hit the dance floor!

There are no cake police, you don’t even have to have one if you don’t want to!

Design and Theme

If you haven’t been planning your cake for years you may not know where to start. Always go back to basics… what do you like. In terms of design you may like something simple and elegant, or something bright and colourful. You may even fancy bringing a theme element to your cake – this is really good for those who want a real personal touch to their wedding, and can be dictated by favourite colours, films or even the time of year. Check out your bakers website for ideas and talk to them, they will probably be able to help you think outside the (cake) box.

I can’t afford a cake

I get it, weddings are bloody expensive. The cake gets uneaten and not everyone likes cake.

If you are not a cake fan but do like tradition, then think about seeing if any of your wannabe baker friends may want to consider gifting you a cake?

Should you choose to have one, your wedding cake can become a key feature of your wedding, especially if you choose to go for something unique and different. It does allow a cake and fizz moment to share with your guests, and you can break the rules but going with something so “you” no one will forget about it in a hurry!
